HARVEST — Cullman, the preseason No. 8 ranked team in Class 5A, lived up to their reputation with a decisive 24-14 victory over the Sparkman Senators Aug. 27 in the season-opening game for both teams.
Cullman senior running back Benjamin Moore piled up almost 300 yards in total offense to lead the Bearcats.
Sparkman’s young team had trouble with turnovers and penalties, making it difficult to sustain drives on offense.
Cullman’s first score resulted directly from a turnover.
A Senator fumble bounced into the arms of Bearcat defensive back Lukas Bright, who ran 62 yards for the opening score.
On the ensuing kickoff, Senator kick returner Blake Chapman bobbled the ball, recovered it and raced 89 yards for the tying score.
Bearcats kicker William Robinson kicked a 37-yard field goal to give Cullman a 10-7 halftime lead.
After a long Sparkman drive resulted in a missed field goal opportunity, Cullman marched 80 yards with the drive culminating in a Morris 1-yard touchdown run. Sparkman immediately went on a 79-yard drive of their own, resulting in a 2-yard Laquince Love touchdown run to narrow the score to 17-14.
With the Senators defense somewhat worn down, the Bearcats completed the scoring on a long drive highlighted by Morris taking three straight carries, runs of 34, 16 and the touchdown run of 39 yards.
The Senators comeback attempt was stifled when linebacker David Brown intercepted a pass and returned it 40 yards into Senator territory.
A penalty on the play brought the ball back to the Cullman 45.
Cullman was then forced to punt, pinning the Senators deep in their own territory where time ran out.
Sparkman (0-1, 0-0) opens 6A, Region 8 play Sept. 3 by traveling to Grissom at Milton Frank stadium.
