In a game marred by penalties and turnovers the Florence Falcons outlasted the Sparkman Senators 28-7 to earn their first region win of the season.
Sparkman had an opportunity to get on the scoreboard early, blocking a Falcon punt and recovering the ball on the 17 yard line only to fumble it away on their first play from scrimmage. The teams traded punts throughout the first quarter until Florence was able to put together a 63 yard drive, scoring on a 5 yard pass from Kendrick Doss to Justin Green. Duncan McKinney’s kick gave Florence a 7-0 lead early in the second quarter.
Florence soon increased their lead taking just 3 plays to score with running back Beniquez Brown busting loose for a 49 yard touchdown run. The PAT kick was wide, bringing the score to 13-0.
The Senators had an opportunity to get back in the game but a long drive stalled out at the 10 yard line where they lost a chance to get on the scoreboard, missing a 27 yard field goal.
Florence then quickly took control of the game, going 80 yards in 6 plays with Doss firing a 40 yard touchdown pass to Justin Green. Doss ran the ball in for the2 point conversion and a 21-0 halftime lead.
Sparkman recovered an onside kick to start the second half and marched down the field until their drive again stalled at the 10 where they turned the ball over to the Falcons on downs. Sparkman finally got on the board after Travis McGee recovered a fumble on the 32, setting up a short drive and a Blake Chapman to Marcus Williams scoring pass.
The Falcons ended the scoring when Brown busted his second long scoring run of the night, going 47 yards for the touchdown.
Florence rises to 2-4 (1-3) while Sparkman falls to 1-5 (1-3). Sparkman next travels to face Huntsville while Florence hosts Decatur.
