Sparkman boys, girls advance to Elite 8

The Sparkman boys’ and girls’ basketball teams advanced to the Elite 8 with victories Wednesday at the regionals at Wallace State Community College in Hanceville.

The boys opened and early lead and held off a late charge by the Northridge Jags to take the win, 51-44, while the girls also held off a tenacious comeback by the Minor Tigers for the win, 43-40.

Jamar Pope led the Senators with 15 points, followed by Jeffrey Landrom with 14.

For Northridge, Rufus Williams had a game-high 17 points, followed by Te’Boris Leatherwood with 15.

In the girls’ game, Alexis Jennings had a double-double of 17 points and 11 rebounds to pace the Senators, while Sharon Rivers was next with 15 points.

For Minor, Ashley Beverly had 16 points, followed by Shanice Blutcher with 11.
