Hazel Green baseball field is good as newPublished 2:15pm Tuesday, March 22, 2011
Saturday will be the first grand opening the Hazel Green High School baseball field has seen in a long time, and it was almost delayed.
“I can’t tell you the last time we had a baseball field on campus,” said Principal Darrell Long.
Construction of the new field has taken two years and cost $150,000, but the grand opening was almost delayed due to vandalism.
Spray paint was used to vandalize signs, chairs and benches.
Long said the vandals remain unknown because the field is beyond the scope of the school’s security cameras.
Cost estimates of the damages are $850, but school officials said the real cost was the labor.
“The big hurt is the work that has been put into getting things done,” said Geraldine Tibbs, the director of public relations and communications for Madison County Schools.
Volunteers turned out Sunday to assist with the clean-up effort, and after a lot of hard work Long said the field is as good as new.
“We’ll be ready to go on Saturday,” he said.
