Paint, relax and drink with Spirited Art

Published 12:23pm Friday, July 1, 2011

“Don’t drink the paint water” might sound funny if someone were to walk up and say that, but if Rebekah Bynum says it, it might be sound advice.

Rebekah Bynum is the owner of Spirited Art in Huntsville. Spirited Art is an art studio that holds adult, children and date night classes.

The adult classes are held throughout the evenings at 6:30 p.m. on weeknights. The guests are allowed to bring their own beverages to the classes.

Bynum said she has been drawing and painting since she was thirteen. She attended the University of Montevallo and received a bachelor’s degree in painting and graphic design.

Bynum said the idea for Spirited Art came from her friends. She said that her friends thought it would be a good idea for her to teach a class and allow people to bring wine.

Bynum said the classes are low commitment, fun classes.

“These classes demystify art,” Bynum said. “As you get older and you find your role in life, walls close in on you. It’s nice to get out of your box for a little bit.”

Bynum said the classes are for everyone, no matter how well they can draw or paint.

“Everyone knows how to do the stuff we teach,” Bynum said. “We are all our own worst critics. All that people need is practice.”

Bynum said Spirited Art is a great way for people to come together. She said they hold special children’s birthday parties and that their evening classes are great for adult parties.

“All different types of people can come and try something new together,” Bynum said. “It’s whatever you make it. People come in nervous and leave feeling confident about themselves.”

Bynum said art is important because it’s a way to relieve stress.

“Just thinking and looking at things artistically is relaxing,” Bynum said. “While stuck in traffic, instead of being mad, you can look around at look at different perspectives. You can notice all sorts of artistic things like scales and colors.”
