Phone scam going around county

Published 12:05pm Wednesday, March 28, 2012

The Madison County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents of an ongoing phone scam.

“Over the past several weeks, we have received reports about money scams where victims are being contacted by telephone and wire them money.  The offenders usually tell the victims they are a close relative and have been involved in an accident needing money,” Investigator Brent Patterson said in a news release.

The caller often knows the victims personal information to convince the victim they are related. “Once the victim is comfortable with the scam artist, they are asked to wire money to a desired location,” said Patterson.

Contact the Madison County Sheriff’s Office at (256) 772-7181 if you receive any calls of this nature, or if you are a victim.
