Afternoon crash kills onePublished 3:10pm Monday, June 18, 2012
Huntsville Police are investigating a fatal accident on Highway 72 Monday afternoon.
The crash happened in the westbound lane of Highway 72, just west of Brian Hill Road around 1 p.m.
Although the crash happened in Limestone County the accident was within the Huntsville City limits.
One person was killed in the collision and other injuries were reported. No names have been released.
Traffic in the westbound lane was slowed down as one lane was closed while crews worked the accident.
The name of the person killed in the accident has not been released.
One man was killed Monday afternoon after his car crossed into the opposite lane and struck another car head on.
George Roberts, 49, was driving a 2002 Mitsubishi Galant westbound on Highway 72 between Brian Hill Road and East Limestone Road when police say his vehicle hit a concrete drainage embankment, which caused his vehicle to re-enter the roadway initially on the eastbound lane. The force of the impact caused his vehicle to collide with a 2003 Honda Civic, causing non-life threatening injuries to the driver. Roberts was pronounced dead on the scene.
Police said the investigation is ongoing.
