Fireworks cause major brush firePublished 4:06pm Thursday, July 5, 2012
Shortly before 1 p.m. Thursday, three children sparked a large brush fire in Madison County.
The children with ages ranging from 9-11 years old were playing with fireworks on Townsend Road off of Northington Road in Hazel Green when the dry conditions and the fireworks made for a bad combination. Five fire departments including Hazel Green, Meridianville, BoBo, Toney, and Huntsville along with Hemsi, Madison County Sheriffs Department, The American Red Cross, and the Alabama Forestry Commission all responded to the scene.
The departments utilized 20 pieces of fire fighting apparatus and numerous firefighters to try and contain the blaze that was embedded in deep, thick vegetation. The teams of firefighters used an ATV with a water tank mounted on it to try and get to the fire deep within the brush, and the Alabama Forestry Commission plowed fire breaks and set back fire to try and limit the spread of the fire. It took the firefighters nearly two hours to get the fire under control in the dry conditions.
