Car accident injures police officerPublished 11:38am Friday, September 21, 2012
A Huntsville police officer was severely injured in a two-vehicle accident on Thursday at Memorial Parkway and Lily Flagg Road around 10:40 p.m.
Officer Charles Draper was transported to Huntsville Hospital with a severe concussion and loss of consciousness.
Update (4:07 p.m.): Draper has been discharged from the hospital.
Draper was in good condition at the hospital earlier today, according to Dr. Harry Hobbs, police communications relations officer.
Draper’s patrol vehicle was hit by a 2010 Chevrolet Malibu driven by Tonya Arnold Brooks, 43, of Huntsville.
Brooks was arrested and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and second-degree assault after being released from the hospital at 1:32 a.m. Friday. She sustained minor injuries from the accident.
Hobbs said Draper was responding to a suicide attempt call when Brooks failed to yield right of way in the intersection and pulled in front of Draper. The accident is under investigation.
