Over 700 Sparkman students skip school over violent rumorPublished 3:30pm Wednesday, December 12, 2012
Over 700 Sparkman High School students skipped school Wednesday because of a threat made over social media.
Geraldine Tibbs, Madison County Schools director of communications, said Wednesday afternoon there was never a credible safety threat. ”There are rumors all the time,” Tibbs said.
Tibbs said the school system learned about the shooting threat on Twitter Friday afternoon, worked with law enforcement officials, and determined there was not an actual threat to the safety of students at Sparkman.
Over 1,000 students did attend classes on Wednesday, down from the 1,800 enrolled, according to Tibbs.
Currently, the school has not made an exception to its absence policy, Tibbs said.
