HUNTSVILLE — Sparkman Middle School teacher Mary Elizabeth Parker was named Madison County Schools’ 2013-2014 Secondary Teacher of the Year and also has been named one of the finalists for the Alabama Secondary Teacher of the Year.
Director of Communications & Public Relations Geraldine Tibbs said Parker, a language arts teacher, went through numerous steps in order to be nominated for Teacher of the Year.
“Her application went on the state department to compete in District VIII which is the North Alabama district,” she said. “She then competed with other nominees. After those applications they were judged by a different group of people, they chose the finalist.”
Tibbs said Madison County Schools should know by early May if Parker won when the state department holds a banquet for the finalists.
“It’s been a while for Madison County Schools,” she said. “It’s an honor to be the teacher of the year for District VIII. It was a great honor for her to even be Madison County because she was competing with seven other fantastic teachers.”
As far as Parker’s chances to win, Tibbs said the school system has their fingers crossed and that she knows Parker has a great shot at taking home the award.
“She is a wonderful teacher,” she said. “We think she has a fantastic chance to win.”
