HUNTSVILLE – By this point in summer, family vacations often are over and sports have wound down, while some children can’t afford any special activities. YMCA Camp Cha-La-Kee gives children a full slate of outdoor and fellowship memories.

“Heart of the Valley YMCA is offering resident camp for ages 8 to 14 at YMCA Camp Cha-La-Kee on beautiful Lake Guntersville,” Mary Anne Swanstrom said. Swanstrom is director of communications for Heart of the Valley YMCA.

“Camp Cha-La-Kee programs provide a fun and unique experience that gives children and teens the opportunity to explore the outdoors, meet new friends, discover new interests and create memories that last a lifetime,” Swanstrom said.

Youth can engage in horseback riding, archery, riflery, pool and lake swimming, canoeing, nightly devotionals and games.

Camp director James Gossett said Camp Cha-La-Kee provides various opportunities for youth to learn and keep physically active in summer. “Campers also learn how to be responsible and resourceful, work in groups, solve problems and make decisions that will help them grow as individuals — all while having fun.”

Gossett cited five reasons for the benefits of summer camp: adventure, healthy fun, personal growth, new friendships and memories.

Registration is open for four- and seven-day camp sessions during July 14-27.

Children of active duty and deployed military personnel can attend free of charge, Swanstrom said. In addition, a discount of 16 percent is available for civilian and contract employees affected by Department of Defense furloughs. Families may qualify for a promotion giving 50-percent savings.

“Heart of the Valley YMCA strives to make a priceless experience like summer sleep-away camp affordable and accessible to all children,” Swanstrom said.
