Sparkman girls stay unbeaten; roll past Bob Jones 62-35

The top-ranked Sparkman Lady Senators jumped out to a quick 10 point lead after one quarter using a stifling defense that forced Bob Jones to miss all eight of their three-point shot attempts in the first half. Sparkman led 34-14 at the half.

Alexis Jennings had 10 points at halftime as the All-State center finished with 14 points and 11 rebounds. She was dominant on the offensive rebounds and showed she can score with the left hand as she hit a layup in the third quarter. Maiya Rumph had 16.

“Any time we can beat Bob Jones is special,” said Sparkman Coach Patrick Delay. “We wanted to come out and execute early and get the ball on the inside to Toni and Alexis and when Maiya stepped out and hit a couple big shots to start the game that was big for us.

Alexis is tough to guard. She can step out and shoot the three. She can take you on the dribble. She is a great offensive rebounder. She is always around the ball when it comes down.”

Jennings has signed to play for Kentucky. At 6-foot-2 she is versatile enough to be a ball handler and shoot a high percentage from the outside. She is averaging 18 points per game and 10 rebounds.

Her passing is what Delay says will put Sparkman over the top this season.

“She is averaging about four points less per game this year than last just because she is getting everyone else involved. Everybody else is stepping up their game so we don’t have to rely on her to score 24 points per game. Toni is a beast on the glass and she has really improved her post moves.”

Toni Brewer has yet to decide what college offer she will take. Rumph has signed with North Florida.

Sparkman lost to Hoover in the Northwest Regional last year and is playing with determination this year.

“We don’t talk about it much but the players know what our goals are as a team and if we play to our strengths then any team will have a hard time beating us,” Delay said.

With the win Sparkman takes control of Class 6A, Area 15 with a 3-0 record.

Last week Sparkman eked out a 41-39 win over Hazel Green.

Bob Jones was led by Chandler Elder with 10 points.
