Board opts to keep fall break

(Updated: Thursday, April 27, 2006 9:56 AM CDT)

Fall break is on for another year.

Madison's school board recently approved its 2006-07 school year calendar. The school year will start Aug. 4 and end May 25.

The change puts the starting date two days earlier than this year and the ending date two days later. The change was prompted by recent legislation requiring Alabama students to attend school at least 180 days a year.

The board had talked about doing away with fall break but opted instead for the other date change. Fall break will be Oct. 9-13. Students will also get three days off for Thanksgiving holidays from Nov. 22-24.

Winter holiday will be Dec. 25-Jan. 5, though students won't be back in class until Jan. 10. The other days will be teacher work days or professional development days.

The last day of the fall semester will be Dec. 22 and students will return to school Jan. 10. Spring break is set for March 19-23.
