Several players named to All-State teams

Several Madison area players were named to the Alabama Sports Writers Association football All-State teams recently.

Sparkman's Michael Kitchens was the first-team place kicker on the Class 6A team.

Making the honorable mentions list in Class 6A were Sparkman linebacker Rodney Garrott and defensive end Albert Rocker.

Madison Academy's Lance Clark was named a first-team defensive back on the Class 3A team.

The Mustangs' Erich Crowson also was named to the first team as a linebacker.

Madison roller derby team seeking participants

The Madison Dixie Derby Girls has begun its 2007 tryout clinic. Interested participants should contact DeLourdes Booker at 683-2353 or e-mail dixiederbygirls@yahoo.com. You must be at least 19 years old to participate.

To qualify for teams, an interested participant will have to attend 65 percent of tryout practices during a 12-week period. Those practices are every Wednesday from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and every Thursday from 9 p.m. to 10 p.m.

The Dixie Derby Girls, beginning their second season in Madison, are also looking for male and female volunteers to help with refereeing, announcing and other duties.
