Women's Club open to all
Sheryl McGrath is looking forward to Feb. 13 when her home will be filled in celebration of Valentine's Day with 30 ladies from across Madison with whom she has become friends.
"We have such a good time together," McGrath explained. "The only thing is the food is too good."
"These have been motivating and captivating for us, and we always have delicious, delicious refreshments," McGrath said with a laugh.
The club also hosts game night, luncheons, field trips and special holiday parties throughout the year.
"We're always doing something special," McGrath said.
McGrath moved to Madison from New York in 2003 and joined the Madison Women's Club the same year by referral of her sister, Margo Williams, who joined shortly after the club's inception. McGrath said she was honored to have been elected president of the club this year.
"I love being a leader and I enjoy contributing to and working on fundraising projects," McGrath explained. "I'm glad the club changes presidents each year because everyone has different talents. Two heads are always better than one and we learn from each other."
Her main goal for the year is to increase community attendance to and participation in the 2007 Bark in the Park event in September, the club's largest annual fundraiser.
"The categories are so cute, the dogs seem to enjoy it and it's just so much fun," McGrath explained. "I hope to expand it in this year because we have such a good time with it."
McGrath also hopes to develop unique ideas for future fundraising events this year.
"And I think we can do it," she said.
The Madison Women's Club contributes proceeds from all events to a variety of non-profit organizations annually, including Madison Public Library, Hospice, Hope Place, Moms on a Mission, The Ark and Huntsville Museum of Art.
"I would say the median age for members is 55, but we have members in their 30s," McGrath explained. "I greatly encourage younger membership with younger ideas to join because we certainly don't want to become stalemated or burned out. We're always looking for new ideas for fundraisers and activities."
The Madison Women's Club hosts a new membership luncheon each October, but McGrath said Madison women are always welcome to attend a general monthly meeting as a guest.
"Come find out what we're all about," McGrath added.
