Start spreading the news—the Sparkman High School Concert Choir is headed to New York today to perform at Carnegie Hall.

The choir will perform as part of the MidAmerica Productions program of some of the most beautiful and best-loved choral works of Vivaldi, Mozart and Faure.

It all began in 2005 when Dr. Bonnie Borshay-Sneed of Denison University in Ohio came to Huntsville in as the Madison County Honor Choir guest clinician. She heard Sparkman’s voices, and she was impressed.

“She saw how talented the SHS students were and asked us to perform under her direction at Carnegie Hall,” said Shelli Rimes, Director of the Sparkman Choral Department.

The 43-member choir is traveling to New York today.

Their performance of Antonio Vivaldi’s 12-movement work, “Gloria,” is scheduled for Monday.

The choir has been rehearsing in class daily to prepare for the concert, as well as giving two fall concerts with additional music to learn.

“This is such a wonderful opportunity for these students,” Rimes said. “I’m very proud of them and look forward to representing our school and community in New York.”

The concert will be held at the Isaac Stern Auditorium in New York City.
