Area students nominated for service academies

(Updated: Thursday, March 8, 2007 1:30 PM CST)

U. S. Sen. Richard Shelby, R-Alabama, applauded Madison County students who were nominated to the United States Service Academies.

The service academies include the U.S. Naval Academy, U.S. Air Force Academy, U.S. Military Academy, and U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. “Furthering one’s education at our nation’s service academies is remarkable. These students have shown exemplary performance in the classroom and in their extracurricular activities. The selection process for the academies is extremely competitive,” Shelby said.

The following North Alabama area students have been nominated: Faith Sanders-Walker, daughter of Mathew and Angela Walker of New Market, and a student at Buckhorn High School, has been nominated to the United States Merchant Marine Academy.

John Bailey, son of William Bailey and Deborah Bailey of Brownsboro, and a student at Huntsville High School, has been nominated to the United States Military Academy.

Jacob Economy, son of Anas and Pandora Economy of Owens Cross Roads, and a student at Huntsville High School, has been nominated to the U.S. Military Academy.

William Blalock, son of Maxie and Karen Blalock of Moulton, and a student at East Lawrence High School, has been nominated to the United States Naval Academy.

Nicolas Blevins, son of Noel and Karen Blevins of Campbell, and a student at Belgreen High School, has been nominated to the United States Naval Academy.

Brian Hannan, son of Michael and Martha Hannan of Madison, and a student at Bob Jones High School, has been nominated to the United States Naval Academy.

Sylvia Kilburn, daughter of Edna Kilburn, and a student at the United States Naval Academy Prep School and Florence High School, has been nominated to the United States Naval Academy.

Although Senator Shelby nominated these students, the academy to which they were nominated will make the final selection.
