City council approves new road projects; others complete
Driving through Madison, the evidence of the city's road improvement projects is hard to miss. Part of Wall Triana is closed to traffic; the asphalt is scraped off at the intersection of Hughes and Mill Road. It may be inconvenient, but it's progress.
At Monday's city council meeting in Madison, the council approved funds for several new road projects, including approximately $100,000 for an interchange at Interstate 565 and County Line Road.
City Engineer Gary Chynoweth said work will begin in two weeks and the project should take six weeks to complete.
"It's the epicenter of the city," Overcash said. "Our goal is to open it up and speed traffic through the intersection."
Also, traffic congestion was eased at Wall Triana and Interstate I-565 by adjusting the timing of the traffic lights last week, thanks to help from Madison Public Works and the Alabama Department of Transportation.
Some of the other projects currently underway include improvements at Wall Triana and Gillespie, which is nearly complete.
"The asphalt is down, lights are functioning, it's up and running," Madison Mayor Sandy Kirkindall said at Monday's council meeting.
Improvements in the road where Wall Triana and Sullivan Street merge began this week as well. Other projects include:
"It's good to see we're paying a lot of bills having to do with roads," said District four councilman Tim Cowles. "It's nice to see progress...things are happening."
