Sparkman sweeps Decatur in home doubleheader Tuesday

BASEBALL

Sparkman 13, 10

Decatur 12, 5


The Senators earned a sweep of Decatur in Harvest Tuesday, improving to 8-6 overall this season.

John Ivey had four RBIs and three hits to lead Sparkman in the opening game. Josh Carpenter, James Ivey and Adam Korak each had two hits. Tracy Jernigan picked up the win for Sparkman, pitching one inning in relief.

In game two, James Ivey had two RBIs and two doubles, while Jordan Boyer also had two RBIs on two hits. Garrett Dennis earned the win for the Senators.

Franklin County (Tenn.) 7

Madison Academy 6

The Mustangs got three hits from Kyle Mays. Joey Tatara added two hits and an RBI.

Bob Jones 3, 0

Paul Bryant 0, 6

Troy Sutherland struck out nine and allowed five hits in a complete-game victory in game one of a doubleheader. Dusty Chivers and Andrew Walter each had two hits for the Patriots.


In the second game, Paul Bryant's Forrest Whitaker threw a no-hitter, striking out eight Patriots. Josh Meadows took the loss.

Grissom 4, Sparkman 3

Aaron Gamblin had three RBIs for Sparkman. A big blow for the Senators' chances was a three-run home run by Grissom's Hunter Morris.

Madison Academy 18, Scottsboro 1

The Mustangs' bats came alive in a win March 9. Kelby Deerman gave up four hits in five innings and struck out six to pick up the win.

Andrew Purshock had two hits, including a home run and three RBIs, and Stafford Booth and Brad Montgomery each had three hits. Deerman added two hits and two RBIs.

SOFTBALL

Sparkman 10, Austin 0

Ciara Garcia had three hits to lead the way for the Lady Senators at home. Abby McKay allowed three hits over five innings to pick up the win for Sparkman (14-4).

Bob Jones 2, Florence 0

In the Lady Patriots' area opener, Kacey Pratt struck out seven batters in seven innings of work to shut out the visiting Lady Falcons. Sarah Nickey led the way offensively with two hits and an RBI and Jaime Voelkel added an RBI single for Bob Jones (11-7, 1-0 in Area 16).

Sparkman 4, Hazel Green 0

All four Sparkman runs came in the second inning and Amber Torres struck out six to help lead the Lady Senators to the shutout.

Hayden Crawford had two hits, including a triple. Ciara Garcia, Kristy Garcia, Samantha Carpenter and Crawford each scored a run.

Hoover 2, Bob Jones 1

Hoover scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to defeat the Lady Patriots. Kacey Pratt took the hard-luck loss for Bob Jones.

Vestavia Hills 2, Bob Jones 1

Kayla Brisendine had an RBI single for the Lady Patriots in the loss.

Madison Academy 7, Pisgah 3

Ashley Guffey picked up the win for Madison Academy, improving her record to 7-3. Guffey, Chrissa Mayhall and Meagan Mitchell each had two hits for the Lady Mustangs.

Bob Jones 6, Alexandria 2

After trailing 2-0, Bob Jones scored six runs in the fifth inning to take a win at the Cougar Classic. The big hit in the inning was a two-run home run from Jaime Voelkel.

Kelsey Moore earned the win in relief for the Lady Patriots.

Bob Jones 3, Tuscaloosa County 1

Kacey Pratt struck out eight and allowed four hits in seven innings to pick up the win for Bob Jones at the Cougar Classic Friday. Pratt and Jaime Voelkel each finished with two hits.

SOCCER

Bob Jones girls 1, Sparkman girls 0

Christen Sims scored a goal in the second half and it proved to be enough for the Lady Patriots in Harvest. Nonie Wilson assisted on Sims' goal and Molly Russell finished with five saves to earn the shutout for Bob Jones.

Bob Jones boys 3, Grissom boys 1

Alex Ghoja had two goals and Zach Query scored once to lead the Patriots to the section win at Grissom. Bob Jones improved to 6-2 overall and 3-1 in Section 8 play.

Madison Academy girls 4, Ardmore girls 1

The Lady Mustangs got two goals from Louisa Kinzer and one each from Maryanne Rieder and Alex Haas.
