Madison's shining stars: A chronicle of local accomplishments
Three area students have each been awarded a $24,000 Presidential Scholarship to attend the University of Mobile. They are:
The Presidential Scholarship is UM's most prestigious scholarship. It recognizes individuals with outstanding high school academic performance who have demonstrated leadership capability. The award is valued at $6,000 per year awarded over eight consecutive semesters and is renewable provided the recipient maintains a full-time student status per semester and a 3.25 grade point average.
Jessica Kay of Harvest, a senior at East Limestone High School, has been awarded a $20,000 Founder's Scholarship to attend the University of Mobile.
The Founder's Scholarship is given in honor of the university's founding president, Dr. William K. Weaver Jr. and original faculty members. The scholarship, awarded to academically high-achieving students, is valued at $5,000 per year awarded over eight consecutive semesters and is renewable provided the recipient maintains a full-time student status per semester and a 3.00 grade point average.

Dean's List at Georgia Tech
Shiv Narain Kak of Madison earned the distinction of Faculty Honors for fall
semester 2006 at the Georgia Institute ofTechnology.
Undergraduate students earning a 4.00 academic average for the semester
gain the distinction of Faculty Honors at Georgia Tech.
The following students made the Dean's List for fall semester 2006 at the Georgia Institute of Technology:
Undergraduate students earning a 3.00 or higher academic average for the quarter gain the distinction of being named to the Dean's List at Georgia Tech.
Private Kean graduates training
Army Pvt. Destiny D. Kean graduated from the Land Combat Electrician Advanced Individual Training course at Redstone Arsenal.
The course is designed to train soldiers to operate and perform unit and direct and general support level maintenance on land combat support systems and operate test stations.
Kean is the daughter of Tammy Overbaugh of Thomas St., Port Huron, Mich.
Her husband, Daniel, is the son of Debbie Kean of Shelton Road, Madison.
Jordan receives degree from Montreat College
John Michael Jordan of Madison, son of Cindy Stalnaker and Mike Jordan, recently graduated from Montreat College. Jordan received a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration. Montreat has its main campus in Montreat, N.C., located 15 miles east of Asheville. Montreat College is a Christ-centered, student-focused and service-driven institution and the only North Carolina member of the National Council of Christian Colleges and Universities.
Local grower state winner in national corn yield contest
An area corn grower has been honored as a state winner in the 2006 National Corn Yield Contest (NCYC), sponsored annually by the National Corn Growers Association (NCGA).
Chad Henderson of Madison placed first in the state in the A Non-Irrigated Class with a yield of 222.7686 bushels per acre. The local grower was one of 504 state winners nationwide. The contest, which includes nine classes, had a total of 3,154 entries from 46 states. Of the 504 state winners, 27 growers, or three from each class, were named national winners. The national winners represented 11 states.
The average yield among all winners was 287 bushels per acre, significantly higher than the average yield of 217 bushels per acre for all entrants and the 2006 U.S. average of 149.1 bushels per acre.
Congressional Art Competition Winner
This year's Congressional Art Competition Winner for Alabama's Fifth District is Lauren Wallace of Huntsville.
Lauren, the daughter of Scott and Teresa Wallace, is a senior at Grissom High School. Her piece, entitled "My Loving Grandmother," was chosen out of 215 high school entries entered from all seven counties in North Alabama. Beginning in June, Lauren's work will be displayed for one year in the Cannon Tunnel of the U.S. Capitol Building in Washington, D.C.
The Congressional Art Competition, known as "An Artistic Discovery," showcases the talents of young artists from across the country.
This year is the twenty-sixth anniversary of the competition. Alabama's Fifth Congressional District Competition is held in association with the Huntsville Museum of Art.
