The Lady Senators' bats came to life as Sparkman (50-8) swept Buckhorn to advance to the second round of the sub-state playoffs Saturday, when they will host Clay-Chalkville.

Sparkman combined for 27 hits against a Buckhorn team dealing with. Jerry Burgess, the father of Buckhorn outfielder Becky Burgess, passed away Sunday morning and his visitation was Tuesday night. Sparkman agreed to move the games up two hours to allow for Burgess to attend visitation and her father's funeral Wednesday. She had a triple in Game 1.

The Lady Mustangs needed all three games and 21 innings of work from ace pitcher Ashley Guffey, but when it was all said and done Madison Academy moved one step closer to Montgomery Tuesday.

Guffey pitched every inning as the Lady Mustangs beat Geraldine in three games to advance to a sub-state best-of-three series in Elkmont Saturday.

In Game 3, Sam Deep walked and scored on a passed ball and Shelby Norton hit a solo home run to put Madison Academy up 2-0 after the first inning. In Game 1, Chris Mayhall had an RBI single to help the Lady Mustangs to the shutout victory.
