Madison YMCA receives $42,000 check from fundraiser
A $42,000 check was presented to the YMCA capital campaign committee last week from the Madison Swimming Association for new Madison facility.
The money, raised at the April 20 Swim-A-Thon fundraiser at Dublin Park, will be matched by a private company-for a total of $84,000 added to the campaign's coffers.
Once the facility is in operation, the member dues will help pay off the construction debt, Windham said.
The campaign committee is in the "cultivation phase" of fundraising-which involves identifying people in community with ties to the Y and educating potential donors about the benefits of a YMCA in Madison.
Scott Mounts, President and CEO of the Heart of the Valley YMCA, said the response has been good so far, and he has no doubt the next few months will bring in the funds needed to begin construction. The site for the new Y is on Hughes Road across from the post office.
Members of the committee feel that the projected fall groundbreaking is still attainable. Since 80 percent of the money for the facility comes from 20 percent of the donors, the committee is currently focusing on large individual and corporate gifts. They are also looking for a donor to give a gift large enough-in the amount of $1 million-to name the YMCA's aquatic center.
Mounts said it is important to educate these donors.
"If you're a donor, you're not going to give to something that doesn't interest you," he said.
