Fireworks are risky due to dry weather conditions

(Updated: Thursday, June 7, 2007 2:32 PM CDT)

Madison Mayor Sandy Kirkindall and Fire Chief Ralph Cobb released a statement last week warning residents of the current high risk of wildfires.

"The Fourth of July is rapidly approaching and residents are reminded that fireworks are illegal within Madison City limits," the release said. "In the past, this prohibition has been frequently violated. While constituting a nuisance, fireworks usually pose a low hazard to life and property. However, this year the risk is different."

The current drought is posing a threat to farmers, homes and wooded areas, and the weather forecast does not look to change in the coming weeks.

"This year, the illegal use of fireworks presents a great hazard to both life and property," Kirkindall and Cobb said. "This hazard is not limited to Madison's wooded areas. Fire started from a firecracker could flash across dry grass, ignite combustible mulch, run up the siding of a house and into the attic before you could call the fire department. City officials urge residents to act responsibly this year, and not to shoot fireworks. Violators could find themselves responsible (and possibly liable) for someone losing his or her home."

Madison sponsors a daylong celebration of the Fourth of July at Dublin Park. The activities culminate with a fireworks display at dark. Your fire department will be there to ensure that any fire that results is rapidly contained.

"The Fire Chief and I encourage you to come participate in that celebration and skip the home fireworks use," Kirkindall said.
