Mayor's awards give students recognition
One of my objectives, and one of the really fun parts of being Mayor, is to recognize and honor outstanding achievement by Madison's young people. In order to further this goal, in 2005 I established the Mayor's Award for Scholastic Excellence. This award is given annually to one outstanding student in each of the City's middle schools (Discovery, Liberty, and St. John the Baptist) and to one student at Bob Jones High School.
The award is given to an upperclassman at each of the middle schools and to a member of the junior class at Bob Jones. The upper classmen are 9th graders at Discovery and Liberty and an 8th grader at St. John's. There were several reasons for choosing to give the Bob Jones award to a member of the junior class. First, the seniors usually get most of the awards; and this helps spread the recognition out a bit. Second, by giving the award to a member of the junior class, the award winner will have the award on his or her resume when they apply for college in the fall of their senior year.
The criteria for selection of the winners is that they must show overall academic excellence and outstanding achievements in one particular discipline. The particular discipline can be any academic field.
The 2007 Mayor's Award winners were: Liberty Middle School - Michael Hall for excellence in Honors Geometry; Discovery Middle School - Deepa Etikala for excellence in Science; St. John's - Jared Brown for excellence in History; and Bob Jones - Adam Gimenez for excellence in Choral Music.
