Sullivan Street opening Monday

(Updated: Friday, July 6, 2007 9:15 AM CDT)

Madison residents rejoice: the detour signs are coming down soon.

Sullivan Street is scheduled to open to traffic July 9, said Gary Chenoweth, Madison City Engineer.

"Paving is schedule to begin (June 30)," Chynoweth said. "The traffic signal installation is behind schedule but will not effect the road opening."

The progress of other Madison road construction projects is as follows, according to the city engineer:

Gillespie Road: A protective overlay was done to stop deterioration of the pavement until it can be widened and final paving installed.

The widening work (widen to 2-12' lanes) should begin in about a month.

Zierdt Road: This widening project is handled by Huntsville.

County Line Road: The signal at Mill Road should begin construction at the end of July.

The traffic signal at Crownridge will go to bid in about two weeks.

Slaughter Road: Public Works is currently widening the intersection at Eastview Drive in preparation for traffic signals.

On the week of June 25, workers hit a 1" gas service line that no one was aware of, causing major traffic problems. It was fixed the same day it was hit and work is continuing. The signal work will go to bid in about two weeks.

Mill Road: The repaving of Mill Road was scheduled to be done this year but must be deferred to next year. Madison Water will be installing a 24" high-pressure main along Mill Road to County Line Road.

Since the water department's work will cut the road in many locations, road construction will wait to improve the road.

Because Mill Road work has been deferred, four repaving projects are being moved up to this year. Portal Lane from Douglas Road to Shelton Road, Gooch Road from Wall Triana to Hughes, Dock Murphy Road from Nathan Hale to past the Bradford Creek bridge and Royal Drive will all soon get facelifts.
