Fireworks shot on Fourth despite drought
Despite the city ordinance that banned the shooting of fireworks within the city limits, the nation's celebration proved to be a busy one for Madison's police and fire departments. According to Sharon Monk of the Madison Police Department, the police received 45 calls regarding the shooting of fireworks. She also stated that two citations were issued.
"I could verify two citations, but Major Weaver said more may come in," Monk said.
"We had many calls," Sadler said.
Sadler said the decision to implement the ordinance was made after a meeting with the mayor. The ordinance, 92-16, prohibits the discharge of any rockets, firecrackers or fireworks within the city limits. The drought made this year's enforcement of the ordinance even more important.
Prior to the holiday, the fire department went to homeowner's associations to help spread the word on the fireworks ban.
Although the ban has been enforced in prior years, Sadler feels there is still work to do in order to make the ban successful.
"We have to do more to make people aware of the ordinance and the dangers of discharging fireworks within the city limits," Sadler said.
