Mustangs move to 2nd place in Region 7 with win over Sumiton
Wide receiver Justin Matthews had a dominating performance for Madison Academy (6-2, 5-1 in Class 3A, Region 7) with seven catches for 152 yards and three touchdowns. Tyler Parker finished with a total of 187 passing yards.
Sumiton Christian trailed 28-14 in the fourth quarter before scoring a touchdown to get close, but the Eagles missed the extra point with 4:10 left in the game. Sumiton Christian then attempted an onside kick and successfully recovered.
Matthews had two touchdowns in the first half and KK Horton had a touchdown run of his own as Madison Academy built up a 21-7 lead at halftime. Matthews scored in the third quarter but Sumiton Christian added a score of its own to make the game 28-14 heading into the final period of play.
The Mustangs travel to Holly Pond for the last game of region competition. A win would clinch a first-round home playoff game for Madison Academy.
