Kenny Mango's serves up tasty local joe

Kenny Dodson loves coffee. So much so, he decided to open his own coffee shop.

Kenny Mango's Coffee opened in Madison in October. "I wanted to create a place for individuals, couples or groups to come and steal back some time to relax and build relations with friends and family. I want Kenny Mango's to be a complete coffee experience," Dodson said.

Most of the coffee served at Kenny Mango's is from a private estate in the central mountain region of Honduras. Dodson and his wife, Nancy, both learned to love the coffee of this region while on mission trips. Caf/ con Leche is a very rich and bold, but not bitter, coffee.

The interior of Kenny Mango's has a unique, resort feel. Dodson did most of the decorating himself. "The interior was created with the idea of helping people relax and feel like they are in a very clean hotel or resort lobby in the Caribbean," Dodson said.

In addition to the tall palm trees and large fountain, Dodson created four faux windows, six feet by nine feet, complete with draperies and cornices, featuring scenes of sandy beaches. A sailfish is proudly mounted over the galley area.

Kenny Mango's also sells espresso-based cappuccino and lattes, and cold coffee drinks are available. Drinks can be personalized by adding a flavor, such as caramel, chocolate, cinnamon or English toffee. If coffee is not for you, tea, hot chocolate and smoothies are available. Bagels, muffins, pastries and chocolates are sold to accompany the beverages.

Kenny Mango's currently has one full-time employee and 10 part-time employees. "My manager, Matt Boehme, has worked with me for about two years now and does a great job. My mom has been my backbone since opening the shop. I wouldn't be where I am now if not for her support and many hours of work," Dodson said.

Dodson and his wife, Nancy, have two children, Tyler, 6 and Olivia, 4. He has taught Old Testament and Psychology at Madison Academy for five years.

Prior to moving to Madison, Kenny Mango's was located on the square in Huntsville. "I knew opening the shop right on the square was a risk due to the lack of quick 'in-and-out' parking and minimal drive-by traffic," Dodson said.

After three years, Dodson decided that the location wasn't a good fit. "I learned so much at the Huntsville location. Many of the people I met there have come to my new shop," Dodson said.

"A great opportunity opened up in Madison and I decided to move the store here. Madison is simply a fantastic place to be," Dodson said.

A grand opening event is planned for January.

Kenny Mango's Coffee is located in the Madison Markets shopping center, at the intersection of Hughes Road and Portal Lane. The drive-through window is now open. Hours are Monday through Thursday, from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Friday, 7 a.m. to 10:30 p.m.; and Saturday, from 7:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m.
