Health Opera helps Madison's workers get fit

(Updated: Thursday, January 17, 2008 11:17 AM CST)

Emily Howard, Madison Record

Donna Smith wants Madison's workers to be healthier.

Smith, a registered dietitian and wellness coach, is branching out her wellness business to "corporate wellness"-programs to help managers and employees lead a more healthy lifestyle, therefore being more happy and productive in their jobs.

"It decreases absenteeism, because workers take less sick days," Smith said. "By feeling better, they'll be more productive."

Formerly a professor at Oakwood College, Smith lives and operates her business in Madison, but she'll travel anywhere in the country-or out of it, if necessary-to coach a client or perform a wellness seminar at a business.

When visiting a business, Smith and her team will take clients' blood pressure measurements, cholesterol profile, blood glucose levels, body fat percentage, body mass index, and other assessments and screenings. Then a plan is put into action to keep the employees healthy.

"Other companies just offer pieces of a program. I want to give them results," Smith said.

In addition to being a professor and wellness coach, Smith is the author of the books "Pumpkin's Veggie Delights," "Whole Food Soul Food - Finger Lickin' Way to Fight the Fat," and "Finger Lickin' Way to Fight the Fat." She has also been a guest nutritional expert on News Channel 19 and hosts a well-received program called "Sound Advice" aired each Wednesday morning on WOCG 90.1 FM.

Health Opera's wellness seminars include "Finger Lickin' Way to Fight the Fat," which includes strategies to embrace diet changes and learn the pros and cons of fad diets. She also includes her own healthy recipes.

Smith's seminars branch out to more subjects than just physical health. "Tough Talks" is another seminar choice, a powerful presentation that challenges audiences to communicate in difficult situations without destroying relationships.

Clients can also choose seminars like "Conflict Resolution," "Stress Management," "Time-wise Tactics," "What I Learned After 1001 Dates" and "Just Us Girls."
