Girl donates hair to Locks of Love
Heidi Schutzbach recently donated some (well, most) of her hair to the "Locks of Love" organization. This marks Heidi's third donation to Locks of Love.
Heidi first learned about Locks of Love when she heard a conversation between her parents and a family friend.
Locks of Love is a non-profit organization that provides hair pieces to financially disadvantaged children under the age of 18 suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis.
Heidi's first haircut for Locks of Love was when she was in the fourth grade. The second donation came in the sixth grade.
"It takes about two years for my hair to grow to the right length," Heidi said. Locks of Love requires that submitted hair be at least 10 inches long.
Currently, Heidi is in the eighth grade and has one brother, Jason. Her parents are Jim and Kyna Schutzbach. Jim works at ADS and Kyna teaches Calculus at Bob Jones High School.
"When Heidi first wanted to donate her hair, Jim and I were proud," Kyna said. "
There aren't many things that a child can do for others that are really 'theirs.' They can donate money or toys to charities, but usually the parents pay. Her hair was something that was definitely hers, and she got a lot of positive comments on her long blonde hair."
At Liberty Middle School, Heidi is getting ready for the upcoming soccer season.
She's also revising her science project for judging at the state level.
She plays trumpet in Liberty's band and is a member of National Junior Honor Society and Beta Club. Like many of her peers, Heidi considers "texting" an extracurricular activity.
Heidi is a member of the puppet team at Asbury United Methodist Church.
"Our team is going to Memphis for a competition soon, so we've been working double-time to get our performance ready," Heidi said.
Another team Heidi is working on is her "Relay for Life" cancer fundraiser team.
Does cutting her long hair make her sad?
"Not at all. It's exciting. I get to try out a new look and I know I'm donating to something I really care about."
