March 23, 2008

James Porter Jones, 89, of Huntsville died Sunday. He was born in Jenifer to A.E. and Mabel Porter Jones. Mr. Jones grew up in Birmingham and was a 1937 graduate of Ensley High School. He was retired from the Crawford Johnson Bottling Co., the local Coca-Cola distributor. He was a 32nd degree Mason and a member of the Zamora Temple of Birmingham. He attended Shadyside and Forestdale United Methodist churches during his lifetime. Mr. Jones loved music and sang in many gospel and barbershop quartets in the Birmingham area. Mr. Jones was preceded in death by his wife, Bobbye A. Jones; his parents; and his sister and brother-in-law, Eleanor J. and Russell Otwell. Mr. Jones is survived by his daughter, Carolyn J. and her husband David Brown of Huntsville; three grandchildren, James A. Brown of Huntsville, Mark N. Brown of Florence, and Sharon B. Muir of Monrovia; and four greatgrandchildren, Mary Margaret and Cameron Brown of Huntsville and Taylor and Lawson Muir of Monrovia. The Solon Vaughn family of Huntsville and the Willard Bowers family of Birmingham were very special "family members" to Mr. Jones. Graveside services were held March 29 at Elmwood Cemetery with the Rev. Joe Estes of Huntsville officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to the music department of Trinity United Methodist Church, 607 Airport Road, Huntsville, AL 35802 or to a charity of your choice.
