Senators knock off Vestavia

VESTAVIA HILLS - Sparkman faced a must-win game with vengence Saturday afternoon, beating Vestavia Hills 4-1 in the deciding game of the teams' second round Class 6A playoff series.

Matt Bradford limited Vestavia to just six hits in the series' third game to help send Sparkman to the quarterfinals this weekend against Paul Bryant in Tuscaloosa.

The Senators, now 29-11 overall, won two straight from Vestavia Hills after losing the first game of the series.


Josh Stanger and Justin Holland had two hits each in the win Saturday.

Sparkman took a 1-0 lead in the first inning with three straight singles by Justin Pearson, Taylor Edwards and Stanger.

The lead grew to 2-0 on an RBI double by Ryan Diehl.

The Senators scored their final two runs in the fifth inning with an RBI single by Josh Carpenter and a Rebel error.

Vestavia Hills scored its lone run in the sixth inning.

Bob Jones' season ends

Bob Jones' season came to an end with two losses last Friday to Hoover in the second round of the Class 6A state playoffs.

Hoover beat the Patriots 11-1 and 9-2 to earn the sweep, ending Bob Jones' season with a 27-13 mark.

The Patriots finished with just seven wins in 2007.


The Bucs finished the series with 13 stolen bases.

Bob Jones had five hits in the opening game. Tyler Leach had two of the five hits.

Tyson Parker had two hits for the Patriots in the second game, while Dusty Chivers added a triple for Bob Jones..

Madison Academy falls

Top-ranked Hokes Bluff's run in the Class 3A playoffs moved a step closer to a championship with a sweep of its second-round playoff series with Madison Academy.

The Eagles, who have won five straight state championships and four straight in Class 3A, swept the second-ranked Mustangs 13-1 and 6-4.

Madison Academy finished the year with a 29-13 mark.

Auburn signee Tyler Stovall went the distance in the five-inning first game and pitched two innings of the second game. He finished with 10 strikeouts on the day.

Bob Jones sweeps sectionals

Bob Jones swept the Class 6A, Section 4 meet Saturday in impressive fashion.

The Lady Patriots finished with 153 points to easily outdistance Shades Valley by 67 points. It was the Lady Patriots' fourth straight sectional championship.

Bob Jones' girls won four events, including the 4x800 relay team that consisted of Kelly Johnston, Ashlee Stewart, Kristina Vaughn and Emily Warden.

The Lady Patriots' Santil-Lah Knotts won both the 100 hurdles and the 300 hurdles to pace Bob Jones. Alicia Matthews won the javelin.

Knotts' time of 46.54 in the 300 hurdles set a school record.

Sparkman's girls finished sixth overall. Katie Huston won three individual section championships with solid performances in the high jump, 1600 meters and the 3200 meters.

The Lady Senators' Amethyst Holmes claimed the section shot put title.

Bob Jones' boys finished with a team score of 126.5 points, 34.5 points better than runnerup Hewitt-Trussville.

The title was the fifth straight for Bob Jones.

Sparkman was 14th overall with 11 points.

The Patriots' Morgan Taylor won the pole vault competition, while Nick Beavers ran to the section title in the 300 hurdles.

His time of 39.99 in the 300 hurdles broke the Bob Jones school mark for the event.
