Claire Towner
Mrs. Claire H. Towner, 80, of Madison died May 2 in Huntsville. Mrs. Towner was born in Norfolk, Va. and has been a resident of Alabama for 10 years. Mrs. Towner retired after 20 years of service from the Athens Public Library system as a librarian. During her life she was very active in both military and civilian clubs. Because of her love of gardening she joined the Athens Gardening Club. Mrs. Towner was a member of St. John's Catholic Church in Madison. She is preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Mary Herbert; two brothers, William Herbert and Robert Herbert and a sister, Mary Jane Getka.
Survivors include her husband, Lt. Col. (Ret) Robert L. Towner Sr. of Madison; one son, Robert Towner Jr. of Madison; five daughters, Carolyn Towner of Australia, Deborah Towner of Madison, Janet Towner of Idaho, Nancy Towner Taylor of New York and Ana Moreno Towner of Madison; one sister, Patricia Muth of Maryland and three grandchildren, Robert Towner III, James Towner, and Elizabeth Towner, all of Madison. Visitation was held at Madison Chapel Funeral Home and funeral services were held at St. John's Catholic Church in Madison with Father Phil O'Kennedy officiating.
