Lady Senators fall in substate series

(Updated: Thursday, May 15, 2008 9:10 AM CDT)

PELHAM - Sparkman's drive to Montgomery for the Class 6A state softball tournament ran out of gas at Pelham Friday with two losses to the Lady Panthers.

Pelham won the first two games of the three-game series 2-0 and 6-2 to earn a spot in the state tournament this weekend at Lagoon Park.

Sparkman finished its season with a 53-8 mark.

Pelham improved to 51-11 with the sweep of the Lady Senators, who were without top pitcher Amber Torres. The senior suffered a season-ending ankle injury several weeks ago on a slide into home plate.

Pelham's Kelsey Dennis dominated the Lady Senators, finishing with 12 strikeouts. She allowed just five hits in the win, her 13th shutout of the season.

Pelham gave Dennis all the offensive support she needed in the sixth inning when Lindsay Price hit a 2-run single.

Tori Edwards took the loss for Sparkman despite allowing just two hits, but she ran into trouble in the sixth inning when she gave up three straight walks to set up Price's game-winning hit.

Trish Zettler earned the win in the second game after striking out nine over five innings. The win was her 20th of the season and 100th of her career.

The Lady Senators were hurt by four errors in the second game and Pelham took advantage of the mistakes with some timely hitting.

Emily Sharman's 2-run double proved to be the big blow in the deciding game. She scored later in the inning on a wild pitch.

Sparkman' first run came when Hayden Crawford scored on a hit by Valerie Gravlee to make it 3-1.

Pelham's Sarah Casey scored on a wild pitch and Zettler drove in two more runs with a single in the sixth inning to cap the Lady Panthers' victory.

Sparkman got its final run of the night on a sacrifice fly by Abby MacKay that scored Ciara Garcia.
