Perfect ACT, SAT scores earn honor for BJHS graduate

(Updated: Friday, May 30, 2008 10:21 AM CDT)

The Madison Chamber of Commerce and local state Representative Mac McCutcheon presented Huijia Wu, known to her classmates as Emily, with a scholarship for $500 because she made a perfect score on both her SAT and ACT test.

Wu was among the graduates of Bob Jones. She was the valedictorian, ranking top in her class of 656.

Out of the 1.5 million SAT test given in 2006, only 226 students achieved a perfect score. Some 2.2 million ACT tests were given and Wu was one of only 256 students making a perfect score.

The SAT and ACT are tests that high school students take, usually starting around their junior year, before they apply to colleges. The colleges then factor these scores into their decision to accept the student for enrollment.

The fund had only been in the works for a few months when this happened according to Bret Posey, president of the Madison Chamber of Commerce.

“With this young lady having a perfect score, we had to get things going,” he said.

The scholarship came out of a cooperative effort between McCutcheon, who said he wanted to help find ways to give back to the community, and the chamber.

“This chamber should be a leader in supporting young entrepreneurs and letting them know, we are proud of you and want you to come back to our community and be a productive part of our city.” McCutcheon said.

Posey and the chamber plan to continue to build the scholarship through the support of local businesses and to award the scholarship to an area student annually.

They also intend to set up qualifications for the scholarship. One suggestion was awarding the scholarship based on ACT or SAT scores, but plans have not yet been finalized.

“This generation of young people will be our future. I encourage our business community to get behind the chamber and continue to give to this scholarship fund,” McCutcheon said.

Wu also received scholarships from Princeton University, where she will be attending, as well as the University of Alabama, Michigan State University, Auburn University, Dudley University, Emory College, Washington University, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and Calhoun Community College.
