BJHS beats Grissom

(Updated: Monday, September 29, 2008 1:07 PM CDT)

HUNTSVILLE - Bob Jones picked up its second straight win by powering to a 31-7 decision over Grissom last Thursday night.

Bob Jones improved to 3-1 overall with the win. The Patriots are also 3-1 in region play.

Nick Acosta threw touchdown passes to Rickey Fernandez and Aaron Sherrill in the first quarter to help the Patriots take a 14-7 advantage.

Bob Jones’ Braden Hager added a 41-yard field goal in the first half.

The Patriots closed out the second quarter with a 6-yard scoring strike from Acosta to JaMichael Davis. The late touchdown was set up by a Grissom fumble.

Acosta finished with 271 yards passing in the win with three touchdown passes.

The Patriots, who picked up six points in the latest Alabama Sports Writers Association poll, took advantage of four Grissom turnovers. The Tigers fumbled the ball away three times in the loss.

Trai Ragland, who has seven touchdowns this season, ran for the final Bob Jones score in the second half.

Bob Jones will return to region play tonight against Decatur at Ogle Stadium.

Sparkman falls on road

LeMeco Miller scored two touchdowns to lead Buckhorn to a 21-14 victory over Sparkman last Friday in a Class 6A, Region 8 game.

Sparkman dropped to 1-3 overall with the loss. The Senators are 1-2 in region play.

Sparkman scored two second-half touchdowns to keep the game close. Matt Bradford scored on a 1-yard run in the third quarter and Justin Bradford scored on an 80-yard reception in the fourth quarter.

But the Senators were unable to overcome a Bucks running attack that piled up 237 yards on the ground.

Miller’s first touchdown of the night and a touchdown pass from Matt Broady to David Petty gave the Bucks a 14-0 lead in the first half.

Miller, who finished with 163 yards on 22 carries in the win, added another touchdown in the fourth quarter to give Buckhorn a 21-7 lead.

After Sparkman cut the margin to just seven points with Pearson’s touchdown, the defense held Buckhorn on three plays to give the Senators some late hope.

Keith Young came up with an interception near midfield to end Sparkman’s hopes.

Sparkman returns to action tonight at home against Hazel Green.
