Madison Chamber honors top small businesses

(Updated: Friday, October 3, 2008 3:13 PM CDT)

Under the dim lights in the new salon at the Four Points Sheraton in the Huntsville International Airport, the Madison Chamber of Commerce crowned the 2008 Small Business of the year.

Valley Babies, a magazine that is designed “to provide education, information, and support for hopeful, expectant, and new parents throughout the Tennessee Valley,” according to Glenni Lorick, the editor and publisher of the magazine, won the award.

Valley Babies Magazine was one of three finalist that included Nesin Therapy and American Family Care.

Lorick said she was thrilled to be nominated and did not think she had a chance of winning.

The magazine published its first issue in August of 2006. Lorrick feels what makes her unique is commitment to helping organizations that help mothers and babies.

“I am really committed to doing all I can to sponsor those organizations that are trying to make a difference in the lives of mothers and babies,” she said.

During her acceptance speech, she thanked her mother for helping her by doing things like helping with Lorick’s four children and being the marketing director for the publication.

“She’s incredible,” Lorick said.” I am so grateful to the chamber for giving me this opportunity and honor, and I hope Valley Babies will continue to meet the needs of Tennessee Valley Parents for many Years to come.”

This was also the first year to have a non-profit category, which was won the Heart of the Valley YMCA.

Shy Needle was also named the Volunteer of the Year.

The judging for the awards was all done by secret ballot. Each company submitted two information packs, one of them had the company name and identification and the other did not.

After receiving the packs the unidentifiable ones were assigned a number and distributed to anonymous judges, who assigned number values to different categories. In the end the judges didn’t know how much each category was worth.

The numbers were added up and the judges did not even know who won until the day of the presentation.

“The mission of any Chamber of Commerce is to help grow and support area businesses,” Brett Posey, the President of the Madison Chamber of Commerce, said. “The Madison Chamber is proud to have had the honor to acknowledge all of our 2008 nominees, finalists, and winners for our Small Business Awards.”
