BJHS students raise money for St. Jude’s
Guests on the roof included Principal Robby Parker and Superintendent Dee Fowler, and Mayor Paul Finley stopped by, too.
The rain stopped long enough on Friday for the guests to make their way onto the roof. Then it decided to start pouring again, thoroughly soaking them.
According to assistant principal Julie Finley, the class wars were a penny-drop competition between sophomores, juniors, and seniors. Whichever class had the most votes, or pennies, by Friday Nov. 14 won. The penny votes could be canceled out, however, by silver coins, bills, or checks.
A class could have someone put in a hundred pennies, only to have those votes canceled by a dollar bill from another class.
The Student Government Officers and Council set up three jugs in the cafeteria, each labeled by class and manned by Bob Jones Peer Helpers for students to cast their votes.
Some students have filled backpacks with pennies while others have decided to use wheelbarrows, Finley said.
“It ‘pays’ to be creative in your class strategy,” Finley said.
The school plans to total up the money raised today and their goal is to raise $10,000.
Finley said most of the students at Bob Jones feel this effort is one that is close to many of their hearts, because some of them have received care from St. Jude’s or they know someone who has.
“While we are in business to provide a stellar academic foundation, I believe it’s equally important that we instill a moral compass in our kids,” Finley said.
