BJHS athletes sponsor 66 Christmas angels
This is the second year they have participated in the program. Last year they were able to sponsor 63 Angels.
“It’s really great,” Leah Marsh, a senior swimmer, said. “It helps out the community and it’s really special to help out kids.”
The program takes one senior, one junior and one sophomore from each sport and teaches them about the seven components of good leadership during the fall semester.
The class is taught by Kent Chambers, the athletic director at Bob Jones, and the toy drive caps off the class and reinforces the seventh principle, which is community service.
The Salvation Army will have a total of about 3,000 angels sponsored this year in the area according to Frank Thomas, who has been working with the Salvation Army picking up donations for about a year and a half.
His wife influenced him to get involved with the Salvation Army, she has been working with them for almost 12 years.
He said that everyone really appreciates the gifts that are donated, especially the seniors, shut-ins, and veterans, in addition to the children, that the Salvation Army serves year round.
The gifts ranged from bikes to action figures.
