BJHS adds another state title
Bob Jones scored 302.5 points to finish 52 points ahead of runner-up Auburn. Sparkman was 34th in the team standings with six points.
Bob Jones’ girls finished fourth, while Sparkman was ninth.
The record-setting team included George Wong, Russel Johnson, Phil Deaton and Scott von Jouanne.
The Patriots won two of the three boys’ relay events at the state meet. Bob Jones’ 200-yard freestyle relay team finished first with a time of 1:28.80.
The Patriots were second in the 200-yard medley relay.
Johnson also took fourth in the 100 butterfly (52.03) and fifth in the 100 backstroke (54.47).
Wong finished third in the 200 individual medley with a time of 1:54.44. He was also third in 100 freestyle after clocking in at 47.95.
Phil Deaton was fourth in the 100 freestyle, just .03 of a second behind Wong.
Deaton, a sophomore, finished third in the 100 backstroke at 53.58. Johnson was fifth with a time of 54.47.
Deaton’s time was the third fastest time in school history.
Scott von Jouanne was third in the 50 freestyle. The sophomore finished with a 22.04, less than two seconds behind winner T.J. Leon of UMS-Wright.
In the 100 breaststroke, seniors Alan Rowe (1:04.21) and Michael Armstrong (1:04.57) finished sixth and seventh respectively for Bob Jones.
Bob Jones’ girls - the defending state champions - were third in the 200 medley relay at 1:54.76. Sparkman finished sixth at 1:58.72.
In the 200 free relay, Bob Jones was third at 1:45.27. Sparkman finished eighth at 1:49.73.
Bob Jones’ 400 freestyle relay team was fourth with a time of 3:51.25.
Sparkman had two swimmers in the girls’ 50 freestyle fnal. Junior Mallory McNeal was second at 24.83, while senior Kaitlin Mayes was seventh at 25.80.
Bob Jones’ Vicky Burrows was eighth in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:02.75.
McNeal finished seventh in the 100 butterfly at 1:01.32.
In the diving competition, Bob Jones freshman Sarah Hoop and eighth grader Sara Lancaster finished ninth and 15th overall.
On the boys’ side, the Patriots got a ninth place finish from Andrew Laing. Sparkman’s Steven Porter was 11th overall, while Bob Jones’ Zach Fitzgibbon finished 12th.
