Calhoun Community College and the Calhoun Foundation are now accepting applications for scholarship awards for the 2009-2010 academic year. The scholarships are competitively awarded based on criteria such as academic success, demonstrated leadership, community service and financial need.
There are several categories of awards available; deadline to apply is March 1.
Scholarships to Recruit Specific Majors - Calhoun offers a variety of program-specific scholarships designed to recruit students into high-demand fields such as the Performing Arts, Nursing, Math and the Technologies.
Valedictorian and Salutatorian Awards - The college has announced that all 2009 valedictorians and salutatorians living in Madison, Morgan, and Limestone counties, and attending Lawrence County high schools in Calhoun’s service area, are eligible for automatic full-tuition academic scholarships. To qualify for these awards, students must provide documentation demonstrating that they are 1st or 2nd in their graduating class. Additionally, for the second consecutive year, Calhoun is offering automatic scholarship awards to any 2009 graduating high school student scoring 26 or higher on the ACT.
Principal’s Choice Award - Each high school principal in the Calhoun service area has been given the opportunity to select one student from his or her school to recommend for a partial scholarship award. Students must meet Calhoun’s scholarship eligibility requirements and apply for acceptance to the college. Other criteria may be established at the discretion of each school.
Performing Arts/Student Activities - Calhoun offers a limited number of scholarships to students interested in the performing arts (theater, jazz band, chorale, graphic/fine arts) and to students interested in serving as an officer of the Student Government Association, or as a member of the Warhawks, Calhoun’s official student ambassadors.
The college has made the scholarship application easier by using one application form which will qualify a student for consideration for any and all Calhoun Scholar-ships. The online application and additional information may be found on the Calhoun website at www.calhoun.edu.
All students interested in applying for a scholarship must also complete and submit a Federal Application For Student Aid (FAFSA) application. For more details on these awards, call 306-2579.
